Aubrie Meets Florence

Gammy really helped us out for the first few weeks of Aubrie's life. When she had to go back to Florence for a little while (I don't know why owning a business means you have to be there sometimes :)!) we decided to make the trip with her. Aubrie needed to take her first trip to Florence anyway.

She got to meet lots of family...
 Uncle Bart

 GG

Gammy's sisters, Aunt Pat and Aunt Sandra

Uncle Tim

 Cousin Ginger

And friends...
Gary and Stephanie

 Randy

Sandy

She got to spend time at Poppop and Gammy's coffee shop (of course)...

And her first bath by Mom was at Poppop and Gammy's...

It was a good trip. She slept the entire way up in the car and most of the way back! Good thing, because we come here a lot!!

Grant Lately

Grant loves being a big brother. He is so sweet to Aubrie. He loves to kiss her (which is very slobbery by the way...if you know Grant, you know this) and hug her. We have had to work on hugging gently and not throwing things at her for her to catch. But he is never trying to hurt her and genuinely wants to love on her. Every time I put him down for a nap or for the night, he wants me to bring her into his room so that she can lay on his bed while we pray and sing songs. Then he never wants me to pick her back up. He says "No! I want her to sleep with me!"

He is also very into dressing up and acting silly. His newest phrase is "I'm the roughest, toughest cowboy ON THE RANGE!" He gets this really funny scrunched up face when he says the last part extra loud.

He is such a hoot! Going from a family of three to a family of four has definitely been an adjustment for all of us, but we are doing well now. Grant found it frustrating that I couldn't take care of him like I usually do (as did I) and took it out on Daddy and Gammy. We had some discipline issues that needed to be addressed (and we are still working on them), but overall things are much better. Please keep our family in your prayers as we go through this adjustment, and pray especially for Grant as this seems to be the most difficult for him. Thank you!

A Wonderful Week

So I know I am a little behind on my posting. Turns out that life with two kids is pretty busy! :)

The Hospital
Aubrie's first week of life was full of many memories (at least the ones I can remember through my fog of pain medication!). We were in the hospital for two nights and three days. I was really thankful for the extra help I received with nursing during the time we were there. When I had Grant we stayed one night and left the next day. I felt like we went home without nursing really getting established and it kind of went downhill from there. This time when we left I felt like Aubrie was nursing well and things were going to go much better.
This time around our stay in the hospital was full of wonderful bonding time. When I had Grant my family was all here and wanting to hold him all the time. (Family - don't take this wrong, I loved that you were here!) But I felt like I didn't hold him as much as I should have and wanted to. I wanted my family to be able to hold him while they were here, but as a consequence I didn't bond with him myself right away. When Aubrie was born on a Wednesday people were all busy working and couldn't come visit until the weekend. That gave us a great chance to bond. Our three days in the hospital were really special with Paul and me getting to hold Aubrie a ton! So, other than Paul having to sleep on an uncomfortable gurney, it was a wonderful time. :)

Going Home!
It is both a little scary and exciting to take a newborn home from the hospital. On one hand I was definitely ready to be in the comfort of my own home and not have nurses waking me up to take my vitals at night right when it seemed I had just fallen asleep. But taking such a tiny little life home is a huge responsibility! And I well remember the difficult first weeks of Grant's life. I was more than a little scared to start that all over again. But we all must leave the hospital and begin our new life...

Stacie Way
When we got home, my family was waiting anxiously to meet Aubrie.  They loved how small and sweet she is. Grant was really excited to finally have his sister home. He wanted to hold her a little, but most of all he wanted to play with his Aunties.

Grant's First View of Aubrie

One of the things that I was most excited about as Aubrie's birth got closer was to see Grant with Aubrie. I knew he would be a good big brother, and I was so excited to see him see her for the first time. He was sweet when he first saw her, and he took a good look, but then he was off to explore the hospital room. We discovered that we have a budding photographer on our hands. Here are a few pictures of their first meeting...and then you can enjoy the hospital from Grant's point of view...

Leap Day 2012

Leap Day 2012 will forever be my most memorable Leap Day. It is the day I got to meet my precious baby girl. I wanted to have a little girl for as long as I can remember, and on that day I got my wish.

I was scheduled to be induced on March 1st. Because of the issues with Aubrie's umbilical cord (you can read more about it here), my doctor wanted to be able to monitor her for the entire labor. That would have been a Thursday. My mom was going to come down Wednesday so that she could be here for the birth. We heard that there was supposed to be a big storm coming Wednesday though, so we told her she should maybe come Tuesday night instead. She ended up running into quite a bit of snow on the way over anyway, and the trip that should have taken 3 hours took 8 1/2! We went to bed, but I heard her come in at about 2:15 in the morning. I could never fall asleep after that.

Around 4:00 AM I realized that I was having some contractions. I looked at the clock to see how far apart they were. They were already about 5 minutes apart. I waited about 30 minutes before I woke Paul up. They tell you that you should wait until your contractions are 5 minutes apart for an hour before you go to the hospital. We started timing them though, and some of them were only 2 or 3 minutes apart. We quickly decided that now was the time to go, not in an hour. I woke my poor mom up, who had only been asleep for about 2 hours. Paul and I left for the hospital, and my mom waited at the house with Grant until Paul's mom could get there.

When we got to the hospital I was already dilated to 5 cm. The contractions were really coming on hard. I had an epidural with Grant when I was at 4 cm, so these contractions were stronger than anything I had experienced with him. I immediately asked if I still had time to get an epidural. The nurse assured me that I did. We just had to wait for the anesthesiologist. That hour was the hardest labor that I have ever gone through. I don't know how women do it without epidurals! You are stronger than me! :)

I had labored for about an hour when all of a sudden Aubrie's heart rate dropped into the low 50's. At the same time, I had the hardest contraction yet, and could hardly concentrate on what happened next. About 5 nurses swarmed into my room. They put an oxygen mask on me and had me get onto my hands and knees. They were trying to bring the baby's heart rate back up by changing my position. After about 3 minutes it still wasn't recovering, and I vaguely remember one of the nurses saying to take me down to the OR because my doctor was most definitely going to want to do a c-section. They gave Paul the scrubs to put on, but told him they didn't know yet if he would be able to come in. As they wheeled me down the halls I don't remember much. I was having extreme contractions one right on top of the other, and all I could think about was the pain and my baby.

I remember laying in the OR with tons of people all around. I was having a hard time breathing through the mask they had on me. I remember someone kept saying "Where is the doctor?" They didn't want to put me under until he was there. The whole time I kept wondering how my baby was doing. I looked up at the nurse who was holding the mask on me and asked her if the baby was okay. She just stared back at me and wouldn't say anything. I remember the relief when I finally saw my doctor, and then I was out...

Paul was the first one who got to hold Aubrie.
He didn't end up getting to go in for the c-section, but she was perfectly fine when she came out, so the nurses brought her out to him right away.

Then Gammy got to hold her.

And after about an hour, I finally got to hold her.
They told me that the time from when her heart rate dropped to the time they got her out was only 12 minutes. My doctor said after he got there she was out in about 2 minutes. It was the longest 12 minutes of my life, and I am so thankful to God for protecting Aubrie and me through it all.

Thank you Lord for your many blessings!!!
